A ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) masterfully captures the dramatic intensity of a Kabuki actor. The portrait is a yakusha-e or "actor print". It features a male figure with a striking, expression, characterized by exaggerated eyebrows, a furrowed brow, and piercing eyes that convey a sense of gravitas or determination. He wears his black hair in top knot. He is depicted wearing an intricately patterned kimono, in vibrant blue adorned with white circular "mon" (heraldic crests), and and an olive green outer robe also with similar crests. The actor holds a folded fan. The background is deep blue and features red and white banners with calligraphy in black ink.
The print is framed with a stretched silk matte and vintage frame with gold leaf finish.
