19th Century Antique Woolie with National Flags and Floral Motif.
Handmade embroidered Textile Folk Art
18.5 x 22 in.
This exquisite 19th-century British sailor’s wool work embroidered "Woolie" is a masterpiece in folk art maritime textile craft. Rendered on a dark, olive-toned ground, the central focus is a oval and the center featuring a finely detailed three-masted sailing vessel, under full sail, complete with delicate rigging against a pale blue sky. Surrounding this central motif is a majestic heraldic arrangement. A regal, royal crown floats directly above, flanked by a fan of vibrant maritime flags, including the British Union Jack, White Ensigns, and the American Stars and Stripes, and Cyan and White of Greece, draped symmetrically with twisted cordage and 3 dimensional gold tassels. The bottom of the composition features delicate floral sprigs symbolizing the British Isles: a pink Tudor rose alongside thistle and shamrock foliage. With its remarkably preserved threads and meticulous long-stitch technique, this piece stands as a breathtaking tribute to naval pride, international seafaring history, and maritime folk art.
