The painting receives a feature in the book "Adolf Sehring and Realism", Kembel Publications; First edition. (January 1, 1977).
"White Barn." Sehring says, "When I started on this one I did not like it but by the time it was finished, I changed mi mind. This barn is actually on my farm, about 25 feet from the pond. During the high stage of a flood, the water rose until it nearly reached the barn, so here we see the mirror-like reflection of the barn in the now-still water caught before it subsided"
The painting depicts a scene of vanishing America; a pastoral landscape with golden hills and a calm lake that reflects a mirror image of the old white barn that is central to the composition and title.
