DAVID ADICKES

David Adickes is an esteemed American sculptor and artist, celebrated for his monumental public sculptures and artworks that pay homage to figures from American history and pop culture. Born in Huntsville, Texas, in 1927, Adickes has carved out an impressive career, leaving an indelible mark on the United States' public art scene over several decades.

Adickes' artistic journey was significantly shaped by his time studying under the renowned French artist Fernand Léger in Paris. This mentorship enriched Adickes' perspective and technique, infusing his work with a blend of Léger's bold, structural compositions and his own unique vision. This influence is evident in the scale and formality of his sculptures, which combine a sense of monumentalism with a deeply personal touch.

Among his most iconic works is the towering 67-foot statue of Sam Houston located in his hometown of Huntsville, which stands as one of the tallest statues of an American hero. Adickes is also famous for the "We Love Houston" sign and his series of giant busts of U.S. presidents, showcasing his ability to capture the essence of American identity in his art. Additionally, his creation of a park in Virginia that displayed these large presidential busts further cemented his reputation as a master of large-scale public art.
