WILLIAM A. SLAUGHTER

American (1923- 2003)

William A. Slaughter was a life long Texan. His first calling was to be a Christian minister, and after serving in the Air Force during WWII, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. It was during a ministry trip in Mexico that Slaughter began seriously to hear another call: Painting.

Slaughter began exhibiting his paintings at local art and craft shows in Dallas. His church members began buying his paintings and before long he knew that he was going to have to make a life changing decision between the Ministry and art. Slaughter belonged to and exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. In 1968, he was awarded first place in landscape painting. In 1973, he was awarded first in still life painting.

Slaughter was a self taught artist and combined his innate talent with faithful persistence to create a prolific body of Texas landscapes, seemingly everyone's favorite subject, in a tritonal, realist style. His paintings are cherished pieces that contribute prestige to the mid-century movement of American Landscape Painting.
