KELLY FEARING
A distinguished figure in the landscape of Southern modernism, Kelly Fearing (1918–2011) was a celebrated artist, author, and educator who served as Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin for four decades. A core member of the influential "Fort Worth Circle," Fearing was instrumental in introducing avant-garde and modernist ideas to Texas art, developing a signature style often described as magical realist or mystical naturalist. Over his tenure at UT from 1947 to 1987, he became a pioneer in art education, founding the state’s first visual arts outreach program, the UT Junior Art Project, and receiving the College of Fine Arts’ highest honor, the E. William Doty Award. Often remembered as a "Renaissance man," Fearing’s prolific career in oil painting and collage left an enduring legacy, bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and the visionary spirit of 20th-century Romantic surrealism..
