New Artist: Francesca Lorinzini

My name is Francesca Lorenzini and I am New York based artist. Born in San Francisco and raised in Austin, Texas, I moved to New York City to pursue a graduate degree in Philosophy at Columbia University. I did not receive an education in Fine Arts, and did not start making art works until August of 2016.

Within the art world, my work has been referred to as neo-surrealistic and psychedelic, but is primarily inspired by philosophical texts and concepts, notably, ‘Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ by Walter Benjamin and ‘The Phenomenology of Perception’ by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The idea is to combine images from different periods in art’s economic, cultural, and political history to tell a human story and create art works which act as cultural relics that synthesize art’s history to the present (something that could only be done in a post-internet world).

Drawing from Gestalt Psychology, I think of my artworks as efforts to stylize the chaos of information taken in through perception, with an aim to beautify the way that people experience the world by re-focusing their attention to details of color, texture, and geometry.
